STC, NOCT, and what the brochure % actually measures
Standard Test Conditions (STC): 1000 W/m² irradiance, 25°C cell temperature, AM1.5 spectrum. Every «22.3% efficient» sticker uses this box. NOCT (Nominal Operating Cell Temperature) tests nearer field reality: ~800 W/m², ~20°C ambient, ~45°C cell — typically 2–4 percentage points below STC on the same module.

Datasheets list Pmax temperature coefficient (e.g. −0.40%/°C for mono PERC, −0.30%/°C for some TOPCon). Math: cell temp 55°C vs STC 25°C → 30°C delta × 0.40% ≈ 12% below STC rated watts at peak noon.

From efficiency % to annual kWh — when the number changes your bill
On a fixed roof area (typical society terrace slice):
- 12 m² usable × 17% poly ≈ 2.0 kWp max.
- Same 12 m² × 22% TOPCon ≈ 2.6 kWp — ~30% more kWh from the same footprint.

Efficiency rating searches want a league table; the useful output is a physics filter. On a 12 m² society slice, 17% poly and 22% TOPCon are different kWp ceilings — that is when % matters. On a 40 m² bungalow roof, vendors sell TOPCon premiums while two extra PERC sheets would have delivered more kWh per rupee. Read STC %, then temp coeff, then ask how many square metres you actually own.
